INSTRUCTION MANUAL SURE AND SECURE™ EXTRA TALL TOP-OF-STAIRS GATE WITH ALARM Thank you for buying the Sure and Secure™ Extra Tall Top-of-Stairs Gate with Alarm from Summer Infant. This hardware-mounted gate helps you create and maintain a secure environment for your child in most locations. It is especially suitable at the top or bottom of stairs. It has special hardware that allows you to install it so the hinged swinging door opens only in one direction away from the stairs. The easy-to-use one-handed latch is convenient if your hands are full. It's fully adjustable to fit openings from 28" to 54" (71 cm to 137 cm) wide and 36" (91 cm) tall. Please read all the instructions before installing the gate. A WARNING: IMPORTANT! KEEP FOR FUTURE REFERENCE! • To prevent serious injury or death, securely install gate and use according to manufacturer’s instructions. • Never use with a child able to climb over or dislodge the gate. • Never leave child unattended. • Use only with the lock securely engaged. • Do not use if any components are missing or damaged. • This product will not necessarily prevent all accidents. Proper adult supervision is required at all times. • This product contains small parts. Adult assembly required. Exercise care when unpacking and assembling product. • Make sure wall-mounted gates are well anchored in a wall stud. • Always close gate behind you. A BATTERY WARNING: • Do not mix old and new batteries. • Do not mix alkaline, standard or rechargeable batteries. • Remove batteries when gate is stored for a long period of time or when batteries are exhausted. • Dispose of exhausted batteries properly. FEATURES & COMPONENTS: PANELA PANEL B Upper Hinge Spindle Compression Lower Hinge Lower Wail Spring Cap Cups (2) Hinge (A) and Latch (B) Templates »« Upper Hinge Lower Latch Lower Hinge Post Screw (4 sets) Wood Screws (8) Wall Anchors (8) Latch Spindles (2) Alarm Screws (4) Threaded End Screws (2) Wrench Upper Latch Plate Assembly Upper Stop Plate Upper Upper Latch Latch Plate with Alarm SET UP: Step 1: Place the bottom of template A (for the hinges) even with the floor and hold it straight and vertical while you mark the 4 screw hole positions for the hinges, as shown in Figure A. Screws are provided for mounting the hinges and latches directly to wood. If mounting into wallboard, use the wall anchors and screws provided. A SAFETY WARNING: IF INSTALLING GATE AT TOP OF STAIRS, DO NOT MOUNT INTO WALLBOARD. If you are mounting the gate to another surface, purchase and use the appropriate hardware. NOTE: If wall anchors are needed: a) Pre-drill a hole in the wall (7/32" or 5.5mm drill bit) b) Insert the wall anchors (included) into the hole and with a hammer, tap gently on the end until the wall anchor is flush with the wall. Step 2: Mount the lower hinge using a single wood screw in the bottom position only marked in Step 1. Be sure that the hinge post faces up as shown in Figure B. Step 3: Repeat the mounting procedure with the upper hinge at the top position marked in Step 1. Be sure that the hinge is assembled with the opening facing down as shown in Figure C. Step 4: Place the bottom of template B (for the latches) even with the floor and hold it straight and vertical while you mark the 4 screw hole positions for the latches, as shown in Figure D. *1 Step 5: Separate Upper Latch Plate with Alarm from Upper Latch Plate by loosening four screws. Mount upper wall plate using two wood screws in the top template position marked in Step 1 (see Figure E). Step 6: Choose direction you want the gate to open, based on Figure F. WARNING: THE GATE SHOULD NOT OPEN OVER THE STAIRS. Position upper stop plate onto upper latch plate so that stop plate wall faces stairs, as show in Figure C. j J 0 Step 7: Locate upper latch with alarm and remove battery compartment door with Phillips head screwdriver. Install 2 AAA batteries (included) into back of unit as shown in Figure H. Screw battery door back onto upper latch. Step 8: Snap upper latch with alarm onto upper latch plate assembly as shown in Figure I. Secure in place with the four provided alarm screws. Step 9: Choose the lower cup whose larger side faces stairs. Insert lower latch into lower cup and mount to wall using two wood screws at the bottom template position marked in Step 1. Be sure that the spindle rest opening faces up as shown in Figure 3. NOTE: The remaining wall cup should be stored for future use.
