Supporting 5.1-channel surround sound, as well as stereo (2-channel) sound, this technique enables a large quantity of sound data to be efficiently recorded on a disc, •DTS Digital Surround is a 5.1-channel surround sound system, which is widely used in movie theaters around the world. The separation between channels is good and provides a very real surround effect. • Linear PCM is an uncompressed digital audio signal. While a CD is recorded in 44.1 kHz/16 bit, a DVD is recorded in 48 kHz/16 bit up to 96 kHz/24 bit. Therefore, the sound reproduced with these signals is potentially better than that found on CDs. This player reproduces linear PCM in 2-channel. • Bitstream is a compressed digital audio signal. This signal can be decoded into different channels to produce, for instance, 5.1-channel surround sound. •The digital audio output terminal (optical) converts electrical signals into optical signals and transfers them to an amplifier. These optical signals are immune to electrical interference, and they also have minimal effect on other equipment. 32 VQT8633 This unit can decode Dolby Digital. Channel balance: Adjust the output level of the speakers to make up for differences in volume caused by different types of speaker or distance. • Go to “7 Digital Audio Output" and set “1 PCM Down Conversion” to “No” (■• page 37). Note • Turn off V.S.S. (■» page 20) if you have connected a subwoofer, center speaker, or surround speakers as well as the front speakers.
