Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 106. 2. Open and remove the adapter-slot-cover latch and remove the failing adapter. 3. Remove the new adapter from its static-protective package. 4. Install the new adapter into the appropriate slot on the system board. 5. Install and close the adapter-slot-cover latch. 6. Go to “Installing the cover and connecting cables” on page 116. Removing and replacing the battery 1. Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 106. 2. Locate the battery. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 3. If necessary, remove any adapters that impede access to the battery. See “Removing and replacing a PCI adapter” for more information. 4. Remove the old battery. 110 Hardware Maintenance Manual 5. Install the new battery. 6. Replace any adapters that were removed to gain access to the battery. 7. Go to “Installing the cover and connecting cables” on page 116. Note: Use the Setup Utility program to set the date and time and any passwords. See Chapter 6, “Using the Setup Utility,” on page 55. Removing and replacing the power supply Attention Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There are no servicable parts inside these components. 1. Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 106. 2. Disconnect all power supply cables from the system board and the drives. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 3. Remove the four screws that hold the power supply in place. 4. Lift the power supply out. Chapter 9. Replacing FRUs (Types 8149, 8177, and 8178) 111 5. Install the new power supply and insert the four screws that hold the power supply in place. 6. Reconnect all power supply cables to the system board and the drives. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 7. Go to “Installing the cover and connecting cables” on page 116. Removing and replacing the system board 1. Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 106. 2. Remove any PCI adapters installed. See “Removing and replacing a PCI adapter” on page 110. 3. Carefully take note of the location of all cable connections on the system board. It will be necessary to reconnect them properly when installing a new system board. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 4. Disconnect all cables connected to the system board. 5. Remove the screws that secure the system board in place and remove the system board. 6. Take note of the location of the DIMMs and remove them from the failing system board and install them on the new system board in the same location as they were on the failing system board. See “Removing and replacing memory” on page 109. 7. Remove the heat sink and microprocessor from the failing system board and install them on the new system board. See “Removing and replacing the 112 Hardware Maintenance Manual microprocessor.” Continue to the next step after installing the heat sink and microprocessor on the new system board. 8. Install the new system board into the chassis and insert the screws. 9. Reconnect all cables to the system board. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 10. Go to “Installing the cover and connecting cables” on page 116. Removing and replacing the microprocessor 1. Turn off the computer and peripheral devices and disconnect all external cables and power cords; then, remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 106. 2. Remove any air baffles or ducts that cover the microprocessor. 3. Disconnect the heat sink fan cable from the system board. Refer to “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 108. 4. Loosen the two captured screws 3 holding the fan and heat sink in place, and pivot them to the side. 5. To remove the fan and heat sink 1 from the microprocessor 2, gently twist the fan and heat sink to break the seal formed by the thermal grease and remove. Note: If the thermal grease seal cannot be broken, you may want to start up the system to heat the processor and loosen the thermal grease. 6. Place the heat sink on a clean work surface. 7. Take notice of the orientation of the beveled corner on the microprocessor. This is important when reinstalling the microprocessor on the system board. 8. Release the microprocessor from the system board by pulling outward and lifting the small handle on the microprocessor socket to its maximum vertical position. Carefully lift the microprocessor off the socket. 9. Make sure that the microprocessor socket handle is fully in the vertical position. Otherwise the microprocessor pins might be damaged when installing the microprocessor. 10. Position the microprocessor so that the pins are aligned with the socket and with the beveled corner in the correct orientation. Chapter 9. Replacing FRUs (Types 8149, 8177, and 8178) 113 11. Lower the handle until it is fully in the down position and locked into ...
