Setting up your software When you turn on the computer for the first time, do not turn off the power again until the operating system has loaded completely. NOTE The names of windows displayed, and the order in which windows appear, may vary according to your software setup choices. The first time you turn on your computer, the Setup Wizard guides you through steps to set up your software. 1 From the Welcome screen click Next to enter the Setup Wizard. 2 Confirm acceptance of Microsoft’s End User License Agreement and click Next. 3 Enter your desired user name and password, choose a picture to be associated with your user account, and then click Next. 4 Enter the computer name and choose your background and then click Next. 5 Click the appropriate option from the Help Protect Windows Automatically screen. 6 Follow the remaining screen prompts to complete the setup process. 7 Click Start when the Thank You message appears. The Windows® operating system checks the system’s performance, and then may restart your computer. 44 44 44 Registering your computer with Toshiba Registering your computer with Toshiba Product registration is strongly recommended, and allows Toshiba to send you periodic updates, announcements, and special offers applicable to your product. Product registration can be completed during the initial start up process of your computer. If you decide not to register at that time, you can either double-click the Toshiba Registration icon on your desktop or go to the Toshiba Web site at at a later time. Failure to complete Product Registration will not diminish Customer rights under the Toshiba limited Warranty. NOTE To register online, you must be connected to the Internet. Adding optional external devices NOTE Before adding external devices or memory, Toshiba recommends setting up your software. See “Setting up your software” on page 43. After starting your computer for the first time you may want to: . Add more memory (see “Adding memory (optional)” on page 50) . Connect a mouse (see “Using a mouse” on page 63) . Connect a full-size keyboard (see “Using an external keyboard” on page 63) . Connect an external monitor (see “Using external display devices” on page 60) . Connect a local printer (see “Connecting a printer” on page 63) . Connect an optional external disk drive (see “Connecting an optional external diskette drive” on page 65) . Use the power cord/cable and AC adaptor to connect the computer to a live electrical outlet, or to charge the computer’s battery. Never pull on a power cord/cable to remove a plug from a socket.
