If you are adding extra memory after setting up the computer, verify that the computer has recognized it correctly as described in “Checking total memory” on page 56. Removing a memory module If you need to remove a memory module: 1 Complete steps 1–8 in “Installing a memory module” on page 50 to shut down the computer and open the memory module slot cover. Getting Started 55 Adding memory (optional) Do not try to remove a memory module with the computer turned on. You can damage the computer and the memory module. Do not remove the memory module while the computer is in Standby or Hibernation mode. The computer could hang up the next time you turn it on and data in memory will be lost. In either of the above cases, the Standby configuration will not be saved. The following message appears when you turn on the power: Warning: Resume Failure Press Any Key to Continue If the computer hangs up when you turn it on, perform the following: Press the power button and hold it down for at least ten seconds, then turn the power on again. NOTE If your system has the memory modules stacked on top of one another, you must remove the top module first before removing/installing the bottom module. 2 Pull the latches away from the memory module. The memory module pops up slightly. 3 Gently lift the memory module to a 30-degree angle and slide it out of the slot. Front of computer Memory slots (Sample Illustration) Removing the memory module 4 Replace the memory module slot cover and secure it using the screw. 5 Re-insert the main battery. For more information on inserting the main battery, see “Inserting a charged battery” on page 110. 6 Turn the computer right side up. 56 Getting Started Hard Drive Recovery Utilities 7 Reconnect the cables. 8 Restart the computer. TECHNICAL NOTE: You must have at least one memory module installed for the computer to work. Checking total memory When you add or remove a memory module, you can check that the computer has recognized the change. To do this: 1 Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then System. 2 The General tab view automatically appears and shows total memory. If the computer does not recognize the memory configuration, turn off the computer and remove the memory module slot cover (complete steps 1-8 in “Installing a memory module” on page 50), and then check that the module is inserted completely into the socket and lined up squarely with the socket latches. Hard Drive Recovery Utilities (Available on certain models) Your computer has been configured with a hard disk partition to allow you to recover your hard disk drive or reinstall selected applications and software features or utilities. NOTE It is strongly recommended that you create recovery CDs/DVDs before using your system. For more information on creating Recovery media see “Creating Recovery CDs/DVDs” on page 57.
