The memory module should be completely inserted into the socket and level when secured in place. TECHNICAL NOTE: You must have at least one memory module installed for the computer to work. Removing a memory module If you need to remove a memory module: 1 Complete steps 1–8 in “Installing a memory module” on page 27 to shut down the computer and open the memory module slot cover. Do not try to remove a memory module with the computer turned on. You can damage the computer and the memory module. Do not remove the memory module while the computer is in Standby or Hibernation mode. The computer could hang up the next time you turn it on and data in memory will be lost. In either of the above cases, the Standby configuration will not be saved. The following message appears when you turn on the power: Warning: Resume Failure Press Any Key to Continue If the computer hangs up when you turn it on, perform the following: Press the power button and hold it down for at least ten seconds, then turn the power on again. 2 Pull the latches away from the memory module. The memory module pops up slightly. 3 Gently lift the memory module to a 30-degree angle and slide it out of the slot. 4 Replace the memory module slot cover and secure it using the screws. 5 Re-insert the main battery. For more information on inserting the main battery, see “Inserting a charged battery” on page 42. 6 Turn the computer right side up. 7 Reconnect the cables. 8 Restart the computer. Your computer’s TFT display Your computer’s TFT display TECHNICAL NOTE: You must have at least one memory module installed for the computer to work. Your computer’s TFT display Small bright dots may appear on your screen display when you turn on your computer. Your display contains an extremely large number of thin-film transistors (TFT) and is manufactured using high- precision technology. Any small bright dots that may appear on your display are an intrinsic characteristic of the TFT manufacturing technology. Over a period of time, and depending on the usage of the computer, the brightness of the screen will deteriorate. This is also an intrinsic characteristic of the screen technology. When the computer is operated on battery power, the screen will dim and you may not be able to increase the brightness of the screen while on battery power. Inserting a PC Card Before you insert a PC Card, refer to the documentation that comes with the card to see if you need to do anything before you insert it. You may insert one Type I or Type II card into the computer’s PC Card slot. To insert a PC Card: 1 Locate the PC Card slot on the side of the computer. You may first need to remove the card slot protector before you can insert a card. 2 Insert the PC Card. (Sample Illustration) Inserting a PC Card 3 When the card is almost all the way into the slot, push firmly but gently to ensure a firm connection with the computer. Do not force the card into position. Removing a PC Card Removing a PC Card Be sure to disable the PC Card prior to removing it. Otherwise, the system may be damaged. Before removing a PC Card, make sure that no applications or system services are using the card. 1 Prepare the card for removal by clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the System tray and then selecting the card or device you want to remove. If the system is unable to prepare the card for safe removal, a message will tell you to try again later. If the card can be removed now, the system displays Safe to Remove Hardware. 2 Locate the PC Card eject button. 3 Press the PC Card eject button once to pop it out slightly, and push it in to remove the PC Card. The PC Card ejects slightly from the slot. 4 Grasp the edges of the PC Card and slide it out of the slot. Learning the basics Computing tips . Save your work frequently.
