Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer. 3. Turn the computer over, loosen the captive screws on the memory module/Mini PCI cover, and then remove the cover. 4. If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing module: a. Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up. b. Remove the module from the connector. CAUTION: Before working inside your Dell™ computer, read the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. CAUTION: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface. NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty. NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer. 1 captive screws (3) NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips. Replacing the Memory Module 1. Ground yourself and install the new memory module: a. Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot. b. Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it. 2. Replace the memory module/Mini PCI cover and tighten the screws. 3. Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet. 4. Turn on the computer. As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information. To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click the Start button, click Help and Support, and then click Computer Information. NOTICE: To prevent damage to devices, store them in a safe, dry place when they are not installed in the computer. Avoid pressing down on them or placing heavy objects on top of them. NOTE: If your computer shipped with a device security screw and the screw is not installed, you can remove and install devices while the computer is running and connected to a docking device. 1. If you want to remove the optical drive while the computer is turned on, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar, click the device that you want to eject, and click Stop. Otherwise go to step 2. 2. Close your display and turn the computer upside down. 3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the M2.5 x 8-mm screw from the indention labeled with a lock symbol ( ). 4. Using a screwdriver or some other type of probe, push the notch where the device security screw was removed toward the outside of the computer. 5. Pull the device straight out of the media bay. Installing the Optical Drive 1. Slide the new drive into the bay until it snaps securely into place. 2. Replace the M2.5 x 8-mm screw. 3. Turn the computer right-side up and open the display. 4. The operating system automatically recognizes the device. If necessary, enter your password to unlock your computer. Mini PCI Card Removing the Mini PCI Card If you ordered a Mini PCI card with your computer, the card is already installed. 1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. NOTICE: To avoid damaging the system board, you must remove the main battery before you begin working inside the computer. 3. If a Mini PCI card is not already installed, go to step 1. If you are replacing a Mini PCI card, remove the existing card: a. Disconnect the antenna cable from the Mini PCI card. b. Release the Mini PCI card by spreading the metal securing tabs until the card pops up slightly. c.
