NOTICE: The card connector is keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, realign the card. NOTICE: To avoid damaging the Mini-Card, never place cables on top of or under the card. NOTICE: Do not insert a Mobile Broadband (WWAN) network card into the WLAN card connector. NOTE: The Mini-Card may have two or three antenna connectors, depending on the type of card you ordered. NOTE: For more specific information about which cable to connect to which connector, see the documentation that came with your Mini-Card. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). 3. Remove the M2 x 3-mm screw that attaches the modem to the system board. 4. Pull up on the pull tab to disconnect the modem from the modem connector on the system board. 5. Disconnect the modem cable from the modem. Replacing the Modem 1. Connect the modem cable to the new modem. 2. Connect the modem to the system board. Align the modem with the screw hole and press the modem into the connector on the system board. 3. Replace the M2 x 3-mm screw and secure the modem to the system board. 4. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Back to Contents Page Media Bay Devices Dell™ Latitude™ D531 Service Manual About the Device Security Screw Removing and Installing Media Bay Devices You can install devices such as a floppy drive, optical drive, second battery, or second hard drive in the media bay. About the Device Security Screw When you install a device in the media bay, you can install a device security screw, available separately from Dell, to prevent the device from being easily removed. Removing and Installing Media Bay Devices 1. If you are swapping a device while the computer is turned on, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar, click the device that you want to eject, and then click Stop. If you are swapping a device while the computer is turned off, proceed to the next step. 2. Remove the device security screw, if installed. 3. Press the device release latch, and then pull the device out of the media bay. 4. Push the new device into the media bay until it clicks. If you swapped the device with the computer running, the operating system automatically recognizes the device. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: When removing or installing a media bay device, handle the device with care. Store the device in a safe, dry place when it is not installed in the computer. Avoid pressing down on the device or placing heavy objects on top of it. NOTE: If the device security screw is installed, you must remove the screw to remove the media bay device from the bay. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove the media bay device (see Removing and Installing Media Bay Devices). 3. Remove the hard drive (see Removing the Hard Drive). 4. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). 5. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). 6. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). 7. Remove the internal card with Bluetooth wireless technology, if installed (see Removing the Card With Bluetooth Wireless Technology). 8. Remove the twelve M2.5 x 5-mm screws from the bottom of the computer. 9. Turn the computer over and remove the three M2.5 x 5-mm screws securing the top of the palm rest. 10.
