Resumen del manual

Introduction
Many customers choose the HP 3PAR StorServ storage systems for the variety of capabilities they offer and
use them in conjunction with the Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) capability in the HP Matrix Operating
Environment.

HP 3PAR Storage Peer Motion, a feature of the HP 3PAR Management Console, allows the migration of
volume data from one array to another.

When HP 3PAR Storage Peer Motion is applied to an HP 3PAR StorServ storage system that is imported into
SPM, changes happen at the device level and cause SPM to get out of synch with the device.

SPM, including the latest version SPM 2.2, does not automatically handle HP 3PAR Storage Peer Motion and
requires the SPM administrator to manually intervene in order for the changes in the storage systems to be
reflected in the SPM catalog.

This technical white paper first explores the concept of HP 3PAR Storage Peer Motion, then describes the
impact of Peer Motion on SPM and finally suggests what an SPM administrator should do when HP 3PAR
Storage Peer Motion has occurred.
Terminology used
This technical white paper identifies the storage system that contains the data to be migrated by HP 3PAR
Storage Peer Motion as the “legacy” or “source” array and the components it contains, including pools and
volumes, as the source components.

The storage system to which the data will be migrated is called the “new” or the “destination” array and the
components it contains, including pools and volumes, are called the destination components.

The system whose volumes undergo migration to the new array is called the “host.” The volumes presented
to the host are also known as VLUNs.

A volume is considered “online” if it exists on an array that is reachable from SPM and it has been imported
into the SPM catalog. A volume will go “offline” if it is imported but has been removed from the array or the
array it belongs to is momentarily (or definitively) not reachable (e.g. for lack of connectivity, expired
credentials, etc.).
Scope and limitations

SPM, including the latest version SPM 2.2, does not support the automatic handling of HP 3PAR Storage Peer
Motion.

HP 3PAR Management Console version 4.3.0.50 supports HP 3PAR-to-3PAR Peer Motion.

HP 3PAR Storage Peer Motion can be done only between FC connected arrays and hosts.
