Please note:The switch will only stay in the down position if the appliance is connected to the mains! Important • Attention:The toaster gets hot during use. Avoid touching the metal parts. Be careful when taking out the bread, it can be very hot. • If a slice of bread becomes trapped inside the toaster: -remove the plug from the mains socket; -then remove the trapped slice carefully from the toaster. Take care not to damage the heating elements whilst removing the bread. Never use a metal object for this purpose. • Bread may burn.Therefore, toasters must not be used near or below curtains or other combustible material. Never leave the appliance unattended. • Do not place any objects or heat-up buns directly on top of the toaster as this could lead to damage. • When cleaning the toaster: -First remove the plug from the mains socket. -Never immerse the toaster in water.Wipe it clean with a damp cloth. • If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must always be replaced by Philips or a service centre authorised by Philips to avoid hazardous situations. • To prevent any unpleasant odors from forming, the appliance should be operated several times without toast on the highest toasting setting in a ventilated room.Allow the toaster to cool down in between the toasting cycles.We advise not to operate the appliance in the presence of birds. • The toaster is intended for indoor use only. • The toaster is intended to be used for toasting bread only. Using the toaster for other purposes such as drying clothes may result in damaging the appliance. Operation (see illustrations): -(Types HD2531/33/34:) Insert one or two slices of bread (fig. 1a). -(Types HD2551/54:) Insert one or two slices (or one large slice) of bread. When inserting only one small slice, place it in the middle of the slot (fig. 1b). -Before switching on, select the degree of browning (fig. 2). • Select a lower position (i.e. 1 or 2) for light browning, for toasting only one slice or for dry bread. • For medium browning set the browning selector to position 3-5. • Select a higher position (i.e. 6 or 7) for darker browning. (When toasting a serie of slices, no re-adjustment is required.) • To reheat cooled-off toast set the browning selector to position O OO untill you hear a ‘click’ (fig. 3). -Switching on: the slices are lowered into the toaster by sliding the slide switch downwards.The light integrated in button STOP comes on (fig. 4). - When ready, the toast pops up automatically (fig. 5) and the toaster switches off the heating elements.The light integrated in button STOP goes off. Type HD2533: Bell signals when toast is ready and toast pops up automatically (fig. 5b). • If necessary, you can move the slide switch upwards a little further (until it stops) (fig. 6).This can be helpful when removing smaller slices of bread. • You can interrupt the process of toasting by pressing button STOP (fig. 7). The slide switch is automatically released and the light integrated in button STOP goes off. Toasting frozen bread -Insert one or two slices of frozen bread. -Select the degree of browning as explained before. -Move the slide downwards to switch on. -Press button C CC to defrost and toast in one go (fig. 8). Toasting only one side (for types HD2531/33/51 only) (Ideal for French baguettes and bagels) -Cut the baguette into pieces of max. 13 cm. -Cut these sections of baguette or bagel lengthwise (fig. 9). -Type HD2551: Insert the halved pieces into the toaster with the sides to be toasted (i.e. the crustless sides) facing you (fig. 10a). - Type HD2531/33: Insert the halved pieces into the toaster with the slides to be toasted facing the heater in the center (fig. 10b). -Select the degree of browning as explained before. -Move the slide downwards to switch on. -Press button — (fig. 11). Now only one side of the bread will be toasted. -To toast only one side of frozen slices, press buttons — and C CC (fig. 12). -To heat up one-sided toasted bread, insert the slice(s) with the toasted side(s) facing you (HD2551) or facing the center (HD2531/33) as explained before. Set the browning selector to position O OO, move the slide downwards and press button — (fig. 13). Warming-up buns or croissants (for types HD2533/34/54 only) -Fix the warming rack to the top of the toaster (fig. 14). Ensure that it is fitted correctly. -Place the buns or croissants centrally on the rack (fig. 15). Prevent overheating: do not place more than 2 pieces at the same time. - Move the slide downwards to switch on. -Types HD2534/54: Press ONLY button ± ±± (fig. 16).You don’t need to set the browning selector nor press the defrost button as well. If you wish to heat-up buns or croissants on both sides, just turn them upside down after the toaster has switched off. Switch on again and press button ± ±±. -Type HD2533: Set the browning control between setting 1 and ¬, yet not higher than ¬. Cleaning • Removing crumbs from the toaster: First remove the mains plug from the wall socket...
