Before beginning the upgrade process, be sure to back up any
data that you would like to restore after the upgrade is complete.
The upgrade process does not overwrite any data that resides
on non-OS data volumes; however, HP strongly recommends
that you also back up data on these disks in the unlikely event
of an unintended data loss.
After the upgrade process is complete, the Upgrade DVD should
also be used as the System Recovery DVD. Subsequent uses of
the Upgrade DVD will restore the storage server to its default
OS volume settings.
IMPORTANT:
The System Recovery DVD that was
originally provided with your HP ProLiant G7 Storage
Server installs the original operating system (Microsoft
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2). After completing this
upgrade, be sure to use the Upgrade DVD to perform
system recoveries on the upgraded system.
Protecting data on shared storage when upgrading a
cluster
A Windows failover cluster requires that all servers in the cluster
have a data path to disks on shared storage. A cluster disk is
always owned by a particular cluster node. As long as the
cluster is intact, data is protected since only the owner node
may write to the disk. When a disk is removed from the cluster,
it is automatically taken offline to prevent data corruption that
would be caused by multiple servers writing to the disk. Likewise,
when a cluster is destroyed (using Failover Cluster Manager,
for example), all disks in the cluster will be taken offline.
When you upgrade a clustered HP X3000 G2 solution that has
been deployed as a cluster, the OS drive of each server is
re-imaged, but you will likely have data on shared storage that
will be retained. HP recommends that these disks be kept offline
until all servers have been re-imaged and a new cluster is
