The Windows® XP operating system displays the All Programs menu, which lists programs and program groups. If your program is listed, go to step 3, otherwise, continue with step 2. 2 Point to the program group, in this example, Accessories. The Accessories menu displays. 3 Click the program, in this example, WordPad. WordPad opens. To close the program, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the program’s window. Starting a program from Windows ® Explorer If a program is not listed in the Programs menu, you can start it from Windows® Explorer. Windows® Explorer gives you a view of your computer’s contents as a hierarchy or “tree.” You can easily see the content of each drive and folder on your computer. To use this method, you should know the file name and location of the program’s executable file (this file ends with .exe). This example opens WordPad using its file name, wordpad.exe. 1 Click Start, then point to All Programs. 2 Click Accessories. 3 Click Windows Explorer. 4 Click My Computer to expand the window. 5 In the left part of the window, under the C: icon, click the folder containing the program, in this case Program Files. Windows® Explorer shows the contents of the Program Files folder on the right side of the window. The left side of the window shows all the folders contained within the Program Files folder. 6 In the left part of the window, click Windows NT. 7 Click Accessories. Windows® Explorer shows the contents of the Accessories folder on the right side of the window. 8 In the right part of the window, double-click WordPad. WordPad opens. To close the program, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the program’s window. Starting a program from the Run dialog box This example uses the Run command to start WordPad: 1 Click Start, then click Run. The Run dialog box appears. Sample Run dialog box 2 In the Run dialog box: . If you know the program’s location, type the command line. For a program in the Windows® folder, type just the program name. Otherwise, type the full file path. For example, to access WordPad, type: c:\Program Files\WindowsNT\Accessories\Wordpad, then click OK. . If you do not know the location, click Browse.... In the Browse dialog box, enter the file name (for example, wordpad.exe) and select the drive to search. When the operating system has found the file, click Open. HINT: To run the same program again, click the arrow to the right of the text box and select the command line from the drop-down list. Saving your work Before you turn off the computer, save your work to the hard disk drive. Always save your data even when you are using the Stand by. If your battery fully discharges, your information will be lost. Your computer can be configured to warn you when the battery is running low, see “Setting battery alarms” on page 115.
