Washing is accomplished by oscillating water manifolds located both on the air entering and air leaving sides of each tier of cells. At the specified water volumes and pressures, spray through, splash back and misting of the wash water occurs. It is an inherent characteristic. This condition must be considered in the design of the plenum area surrounding the cells. It becomes extremely important when the package arrangement requires the return air to come vertically up from the floor where the air cleaner drain basin terminates. Unless prevented, heavy droplets as well as lighter mists will fall through the return air opening. The result of this over spray can be serious depending on what is below the opening. As usual, adequate space is a good solution. As always, space is at a premium and costly. Therefore, mist eliminators in some form become practical. One-inch thick metal mesh pre-filter has been successfully used. (Single layer perforated plate when located at the dimensions shown on the attached sketch have not been successful. Some droplets and mist will penetrate through holes in the plate.) Regardless of the type of eliminator selected, the run off from the eliminator must be directed to the inside of the drain basin. If metal mesh filters are employed, both sides of the vertical planes must be well within the basin as when the media becomes saturated run off occurs on both sides. Refer to sketch attached. In addition to this point of design, consideration should also be given to restricting air bypass underneath the electronic air cleaner, drain locations, trap, rust prevention and service space. Suggested drain basin configuration drawings are available upon request.
