Appendix A Hot Keys Hot keys are keys that, when pressed in combination with the Fn key, turn system functions on and off. Hot keys have a legend on the key indicating the option or feature the key controls. Volume Mute Fn + This hot key enables/disables volume mute on your computer. When volume mute is enabled, no sound will come from the speakers or headphones. 234 Hot Keys 235 Password security Password security Fn + This hot key blanks the display. Without a password The Fn + F1 key combination turns off the display and activates instant security. Using the pointing device or any key will make the display’s content reappear, if no password is set for the current user. With a password The Fn + F1 key combination turns off the display and activates instant security. If you set a blank screen saver, pressing the Fn + F1 key combination to activate instant security will cause the screen to go blank. Using the pointing device or any key will make the display’s content reappear. The Windows® operating system log-on screen will appear, prompting you for a password. After typing in the password for the current user, press Enter. To activate the password feature: 1 Click Start, Control Panel, then click Appearances and Themes. 2 Click one of the following: . Choose a screen saver in the “Pick a task” section . Display in the “or pick a Control Panel icon” section The Display Properties window appears. Hot Keys 236 Password security 3 If you clicked Choose a screen saver, the Screen Saver tab has already been selected. If it is not selected, click the Screen Saver tab. 4 Click the On resume, password protected check box. 5 Click OK. Maintaining security when the battery is not fully charged When the battery is not fully charged (even if the computer is operating on AC power) your display may reappear automatically after a short time. To protect your desktop, you must set up a screen saver with a password before activating the password feature. To set up a password with a screen saver, go to Windows XP help for instructions: 1 Click Start, Help and Support. 2 In the Search field, type password screen saver. 3 Press Enter. 4 Click the Protect your files with a screen saver password link located under the suggested topics. Follow the steps listed in the Windows help to set up your password-protected screen saver. To ensure the password protection is activated after pressing Fn + F1 (to activate instant security), wait ten seconds before walking away from the computer.
